Anaesthesia for day care surgeries: comparasion between thoracic and lumbar spinal anaesthesia

Background: Day care surgeries are becoming increasingly popular in the modern times. Hence day care anaesthesia has emerged as one of the fastest growing branches in modern anaesthetic practice. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most commonly performed day care surgeries. In this study we aimed at evaluating two different approaches for day care anaesthesia in laparoscopic cholecystectomies – thoracic vs lumbar. Materials and methods: 60 ASA 1 and 2 patients who were scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomies were divided into two groups.

The perception of smile esthetics in different malocclusions among orthodontists and laypersons – an eye tracking study

Background: One of the important aspect of facial esthetics is smile. Patients having malocclusion do not pose a full smile as they are conscious of the compromised esthetics of their dentition. Correction of malocclusion harmonizes the soft tissues and results in enhanced facial esthetics. In order to obtain a clinically satisfactory outcome, it is imperative one must understand that what is beautiful and attractive to the orthodontist and general dentists might not seem attractive to the patients.

Patterns of and reasons for tooth extractions in a saudi population

Aim: The aim of this study was to detect the patterns of and reasons for permanent tooth extractions in a Saudi population in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: 318 Saudi patients aged ≥10 years residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with at least one permanent tooth extracted or diagnosed for extraction were randomly selected. The Study was carried out from September 2018to December 2018. The reason for extraction was documented whether by asking the patient why his/her tooth was extracted or by clinical and radiographic examination for the tooth diagnosed for extraction.

Efficacy of manual hyperinflation from supine position on arterial oxygenation in patients with unilateral lung diseases

Background/aim: One of the more difficult ventilator problems confronting physicians in the critical care unit is the management of patients who have unilateral lung disease (ULD) . This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of manual hyperinflation (MHI) in supine position on arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) in those patients.

Role of tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy in anaplastic thyroid cancer

Background: Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is an orphan disease with an extremely poor prognosis. Radical surgery is possible only for stage IVA anaplastic thyroid cancer, and no effective treatments are available for stage IVB or IVC anaplastic thyroid cancer. The response rate of the disease to cytotoxic chemotherapy has been previously reported as unsatisfactory. Objective: In 2015, lenvatinib was approved and reimbursed for anaplastic thyroid cancer in Japan, including radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer.

Management of fractured central incisor with richmond crown

Background: Endodontically treated teeth are more prone to fractures than the vital teeth. Fracture occurrence is more in posterior teeth than anterior teeth as the masticatory forces are higher and teeth are weaker. In the late 19th century, the “Richmond crown,” a single-piece post-retained crown with porcelain facing, was introduced to function as a bridge retainer, it incorporated a threaded tube in the canal with a screw retained crown. Objective: Prosthetic rehabilitation of fractured central incisor following endodontics treatment.

Safety profile of double gloving: a necessity or myth in prevention of accidental prick injury to surgeons

Introduction: Wearing sterile Latex gloves provide an essential protection to both surgeon as well as the patient and thus prevent disease transmission from surgeon to patient and vice versa. The risk of transmission of pathogens such as hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from infected patients to the operating surgeon as well as from surgeon to patient has lead to attention on the reliability of intact surgical gloves in preventing contact with the patient’s body fluids.

A cross sectional study of knowledge, attitude and practice of medical students about organ donation

Background: In 1912 Transplant pioneer Alexis Carrell received the Nobel Prize for his work in the field. The French surgeon had developed methods for connecting blood vessels and conducted successful kidney transplants on dogs. Ukrainian doctor Yu Yu Voronoy transplanted the first human kidney, using an organ from a deceased donor. The recipient died shortly thereafter as a result of rejection (Bilgel et al., 2006). In 1982 on December 2, Barney Clark received the first artificial heart; he survived for 112 days (Taimur Saleem et al., 2009).
